Would this work for a growing medium??

Al, justaguy,

If this is question has an obvious answer then please excuse my ignorance. I was outside working and curiosity got the best of me. These wood shavings are birch. Some of them are several inches long and about as thick as coarse graded cheese. I had a couple rounds of birch that were to big to split easily so I cut them in half with the grain. After a couple cuts I stood there looking at the mound of shavings. I immediately thought of the folks that use cypress mulch to grow hydroponically. I donÂt know what the PH would be or if it would work in AlÂs mix but it got me thinking. It would be a little harder to mix with other ingredients like peat, bark or perlite but it would add more air pockets to the container. I can make a wheel barrow of the stuff in about 30 seconds. With all the wood in my yard I could make enough to fill all the containers on my side of town in a few minutes. Is it worth an experiment?
