I follow the directions of the fertilizer package. For example, if I'm using Fish emulsion, the package gives me the dose and the frequency of every two weeks. With Foliage Pro, the instructions give me the dose and the frequency of once a week.

With very frequent watering - like daily during the hot summer months - nutrients can be leached out very rapidly. 6 weeks would be a very long time for them to hang around. Typically the recommendation if using any sort of liquid or water soluble fert (as opposed to CRF's) is weekly, weakly or once a week at no more than half strength.

What kind of potting mix are you using? If you used a store bought mix, did the label say anything about having fertilizer in the mix? Tomatoes and squash are heavy feeders, meaning they need more fertilizer than the average house plant. Most store bought mixes (like MiracleGro) are made for house plants. Peppers are medium feeders and herbs can get by with a lot less food. Unless you added extra fertilizer when putting the plants in the pots, I would start fertilizing with a soluble fertilizer within two to four weeks of planting out and continue to do that, following label instructions, through the season.
