Soil for container garden

I bought some organic vegetables to plant in containers on our deck. While I was out, my husband decided to do me a favour and dig up some dirt from the woods on the edge of our property and use that to fill up the containers so I could plant the veggies.

Is it really necessary to buy "fresh" soil when planting a container garden or is dirt just dirt? Does it matter where the dirt is located if it is "just dirt"? We live just a couple hundred of yards from/in sight of a state highway and so would this mean the soil isn't as healthy as soil I might get at a garden center? I've always bought soil at the garden center for my gardening needs. My husband is trying to be frugal. What do you think?
