Seed Starting - Help

Hello all,

I seem to be having trouble with some of my seed starting efforts this year. Other than a half-dozen seed plantings in previous years, this is really the first time I have tried this in any sort of scale.

I have managed to grow quite a few flower seeds (petunias and mallows) as well as a cucumber bush champ for a pot, but other than that I seem to be having trouble. Some specifics:

Lettuce - seems to be a real problem for me for some reason. I started out with a few seeds, and only one showed any promise. Then it died. I have now moved onto a larger sowing (36 or so over 4 flats to be thinned out) but after 4 days I have yet to see any indication that they are going to move.

Spinach - actual success here.

Broccoli - moderate success here. one out of 6 original seeds survived and the next batch has two out of 24 seeds sprouting after 3 days.

Cauliflower - actual success.

onions - planted 27 seeds and have 3 viable sprouts after 6 or 7 days. Kept them in the dark for the first 4 days and then opened it up after the first two sprouts came out.

Other problems include dill, oregano, Shasta daisies, impatiens, and a few other flowers.

I seem to be having trouble keeping moisture in the surface level. The bottoms seem (?) to be getting enough water, but the tops seem to be drying out quite a bit unless I am misting more than three times a day or keeping them under tight cover. However, I am trying to keep air circulation going with a fan blowing over the whole area generally and gently. Is that the problem?

Am I just expecting too much too soon, or should I be seeing some (any) action after three to five days?

Thanks,

Michael
