I have a buck board in my side yard left from the previous owner. I found an old trunk, watering can, pales, washboard and tub etc. to plant on it. In the trunk I placed 5 gal. buckets for the plants. All the containers have good drainage. All are too big to empty each fall. In the spring I dig out the top third and replace it with new potting mixture. It is all in the shade so I plant a different colored impatient in each container. The first few years they were glorious. Now this year and last, not so much. They do not bloom and tend to wilt and DIE. It seems like they are over watered, and get not enough sun. But the location has not changed and I don't water much. Nothing has changed in how I deal with them so what is going wrong? Is there a reason I should replace ALL the soil each year? I filled the containers with rock so try and avoid getting down too far when I add new each spring. Any ideas as to what is wrong. I did add those water saving graduals. Are they a problem? The impatiens I put in the ground at the base of the buckboard are fine, so the light and water can't be it...
