Container basil doing very poorly... help!

Of all things on earth, I'm slowly succeeding in killing off my potted basil. I planted it in a half and half mixture of rose soil and plain jane potting soil for good drainage, all organic--gave it a dab of fertilizer. Three weeks later, it has rained since the day I planted it and the well drained soil is no longer so well drained. The first week the plant tripled in size, but as the rain's worn on, it's turning yellow and spotty from the bottom up. I aerated the soil by stirring it up gently with a butter knife, but the root structure has already shot all through the damn container--they were even up against the sides. The container should be amply large enough though... so I'm not sure what else to do.

Should I bring it inside? Should I water-starve it? Should I keep aerating the soil to improve drainage, or will I damage the root structure?

Blah! How can basil be so difficult? Perhaps a voo-doo chicken dance...
