Container Tree

I have a Malus 'Sargent Tina', a flowering crab, that is supposed to grow to 6-8' high with a 12' spread... it is noted as a dwarf on the label... I have had it for a couple years and it has grown a bit, though it is in its pot still (the roots I'm sure are now embedded into the raised bed where it had been buried for winter protection the first year) ... I want to put it in a pot in the front yard... is a 24 inch pot(which tapers narrower toward the bottom) big enough or should it be a half whisky barrel... And am I able to just leave it---I can't imagine having to change the dirt later... I had considered using a big pot and taking the bottom off it so the roots could grow down into the ground... I dont want to ever have to contend with its roots later, though, in my beds...And if it is a whiskey barrel, does it have to treated somehow?
