Pine straw is the needles from long-needled pine trees such as the loblolly and longleaf pines in my yard.

They are good mulch -- light, dry, and nearly weed-free, but can be acidic and take a fairly deep layer to smother out tough weeds.

I personally wouldn't buy pine straw because of the acidity and the fact that it takes forever to decay but since all I need to do around here is rake them out from under the trees or off the edge of the road, ...

So just regular pine needles.....like this?

If so, I believe I have found the perfect free source for adding on top of my plastic solar mulch in the rows of my garden:

Yep, just pine nnedles, When I first came to Georgia I had to adjust to everyone calling them pine straw. back in Virginia we called them pine needles. It is the long leaf type that is baled and sold as iam3killerbs stated. Short leaf types work just as well for mulch, but don't bale well.

Ah cool! I was going to go purchase some mulch and I have all that I can use right here in my own yard.

Thank you both for your responses.

The fact that pine doesn't decay quickly means it will last the season then finally decompose which makes it perfect for a mulch.
