dieing squash and melons

I've been gardening for about 6 years on this plot of land and regardless of what the weather is like it happens every year; the first month of production, all my baby squash die. They swell a bit to 2-3 inches and then they go soft, wilt and die. By the end of July only about 25% continue to die and I do end up getting some fruit by the end of the summer.

This year I potted up some in purchased potting soil to see if it made a difference, it hasn't. Help!
