Broccoli Seeding Time?

Hi, I planted broccoli in April and they have just started to form heads. Once the heads have fully developed I want to rip them out and plant new plants for a second crop.

My question is, when should I start the seeds to have good sized transplants, that will be ready to plant July 15? This date is my ideal time for a late crop of broccoli in my area.

About a month in advance, so June 15th.

Now my other question is, isn't it to warm to plants these out on July 15 even through the ministry of agriculture gives that date? Would it be better to plant the first week of August to maybe avoid some of the risk of bolting?

Well, this is going to be my first year trying this as well (although I figured Jul 23 as the transplant date) so I can't say for sure. But I can say that I transplanted cauliflower in mid July last year, and got a reasonable crop around the end of Sept. In theory, the trick is to get it to mature in the cooler weather, so you want it well along by the time Sept arrives. My experience with spring plantings is that it's going to take a good 8 weeks to grow a crop. And my experience with other crops is that the growing season is mostly done by the end of Sept (although the warm fall last year is making me reconsider that observation). Sooo... long story short, I'm going with Jul 23 transplant, aiming for a Sep 23 harvest, and then going from there for next year :o)

Great, I will go with July 23rd planting and June 23rd seeding. I plant from my foundation then out about 4 feet, this creates a nice warm spot so I am hoping it works well. I am also going to find a variety that matures the fastest.

I see you are from London, I used to go there all the time when I was living in Woodstock. Now that I am located in Brantford I do not make it there very often. London is such a nice city, I always look forward to trips to Heeman's.

Maybe you should stick with the 15th, and then we could compare notes? There's really no reason to assume that my guess is any better than yours. I'm going to try "Packman Hybrid" which is rated at 57 days (presumably from transplant date). The package says to seed June/July for fall crops. I started the seeds too early for the spring crop, leading to overgrown transplants, which has ultimately led to small heads which are just starting to form now. Ah well, there's always next year. If we grew great crops of everything right off the bat, where'd the fun be?

I actually lived in Brantford for 2 years in the early 90s (Park St just off Market St on the hill). It's certainly off the beaten path, and more closely connected to Hamilton than London, so I can see why you don't get this way much.

    Cheers,

That actually sound like a good plan, we can then see what date is best or if it makes any difference at all. I will be posting all my results on my blog so you can track how mine is doing there and leave a message for how your crop is doing.
