when to pick charentais?

I have "savor". Ive read conflicting things. The seed packet says when the rind goes from green to a grey, tried that, not ripe. Then i read it should turn beige. But i cant find any pics of what this beige looks like. Its grey green in all the photos iv seen. Now ants are eating throuh the stems where they enter the melons.....i have one that has a patch thats goldish? Is that what beige means? Then i read pick it as soon as i see this because it will split if left too long, but one guy says to let it color fully. Aaaghh! I just want at least one ripe charentais!!! Help!
