When would a persimmon leaf out?

I'm a bit concerened about the bare root persimmon (fuyu) I planted back at the end of January. Just about everything in my back yard has started leafing out or is dang close to leafing out, except the persimmon. Even my bartlett pears which will probably never get enough chill to fruit here look to be about a week or so away from fully waking up.

I have no experience with persimmon at all so am not sure what's normal for them - it has teeny little buds on it that were there when I bought it IIRC, but I don't see any sign of them getting any bigger. It seemed like my santa rosa plum planted at the same time went from asleep to full leaves seemingly overnight where with the apples and pears there's always plenty of bud swelling to tell when they are starting to wake up. I though that fuyu are low chill which I assumed also meant early to wake up - but like I said I am still a newbie with fruits and don't know exactly what to expect.

    Scottlk,

An *established* persimmon would certainly be leafing-out by now in San Diego -- they're starting to come out of dormancy here in Northern California, and I'm sure that you would be ahead of us.

However, a newly-planted tree may take longer to start growing. This has been my experience, anyway.

Who knows where that new tree of yours was propagated -- it could have come down from Oregon or Washington State. If it did come from an entirely different area, I wonder whether its "internal clock" might be off-schedule, relative to San Diego.

Or it could just be that shocked roots retard foliation in persimmons that were planted bare-root.

You might want to paint it white with some non-toxic latex paint, to forestall dessication and reflect heat away until the tree starts putting out roots and taking up water from the ground.

All of my persimmons when first bought and planted were always the last trees to leaf out.

Now it is the native American persimmons that are still dormant. My oriental and hybrid persimmons are showing green buds, and some have small leaves. Time to graft some more cultivars this weekend.

When I got my Persimmon from Raintree, they said it might not even leaf out the first year at all, to leave the stick two full seasons just in case. I think it did eventually leaf out in June, after it got hot.

I planted my bareroot fuyu giro that I bought in the Homedepot store. It was planted in early January. I just noticed last week the buds are swelling. Most of the of new trees I bought had flowers and are leafing out.My new fig tree is bud-awelling. I think it is a matter of internal biological clock and temperature. Unless the tree dehydrated too much while in bare root state the plant should be able to make it. My Fuyu and Izu, which were new last spring, are also late leafing out. My tropicsnow peach has not broken dormancy yet either. My dozen or so other trees have.

My Suruga persimmon has tiny green leaves on it. Chocolate, Hiyakume and Maru haven't broken dormancy yet but the buds are about ready to. It is in the 90's here so it shouldn't be long. I was told that persimmons are late, like April. Mulberries (black) are late too. My Tropic Snow peach, however, was among the first to bloom and it was the first to leaf out. It was planted this winter.

Thanks for all your replies, I'll continue waiting patiently.

I was out checking the tress in the back yard today and my 1 year old Anna apple is done blossoming already, and even has a couple 1/2 marble size apples starting. It'll be fun to see if it keeps any this year!

When I first planted mine, it took forever to leaf out. I thought for sure it was dead.

this is such an amazing old thread... I came here looking for this exact answer about my new little Izu persimmon. Now that it was been 13 years for this thread... how are your persimmons doing?

Indeed. This is my first year with american persimmon planted in October last year and I still do not see any leaves. Fingers crossed it is alive and well. Glad I found this thread. ( Edit Apr 24th: I see leaf buds and leaves. Yay!)

Helpful to see this thread, especially thankful that Carla from Sacramento put a date (June) on her information (why no one else did?). It's almost May and we have an eight foot tall stick with no sign of life. Thanks to you guys, I will wait longer.

    Hi Kevin
I have heard several say their persimmon bare roots didn't wake up until August. I would wait until fall, and then dig it up to see if the roots are dead. And replant it if the roots are growing.

Thank you Carla. I am so happy I found this thread! I too live in Sacramento and bought my Fuyu Persimmon last winter. I just went out to check on it (April 27) and the tiny buds show no sign of emerging. I feared the tree was dead. Thanks to all these comments, I will wait longer!

Hi I planted 13 American persimmon 3-4’ tall here in central PA 4 weeks ago. No sign of life yet from them. Pears planted at same time are budding nicely and apples have a few blooms. Glad I read these posts as I was beginning to worry about the persimmons. I’ll try to be patient. I really hope I see something by June

Mine leaved in July 2020 after i thought it was dead and i carelessly moved things around and broke it. In 2 weeks it was full of leaves and it healed. This year again it's may and no sign of activity but i'll not tease it again, from this thread I see it takes a whe to break dormancy. I'm at 45deg latitude in central urope

I planted a bare root Fuyu in the spring of 2022 and it finally leafed out in late May. I also thought it was dead but it was alive. It did not grow much but I think it will be fine this year.
