Green bean root problems

I've been gardening since 1974 and beans are one the easiest and most rewarding veggies to grow, what with two pickings (zuccini don't count because it's an alien life form). Well, this year I bought from a bulk seed bin and the 'kid' didn't know the variety. We were just begining to get some healthy sized beans when they began to stop growing - plant and bean - and no signs of second blossoming. We yanked the plants and there were small (round with the diamenter of the head of a straight pin)'things' attached to the roots. After a few minutes in the air they were dropping off of the roots. What the heck? I assume some sort of root suckers but which one?
