RD---Can you tell us more about the large (and lovely) series of giant heads? Just how big are they and what is the story behind them? Are they installed in one location or individually placed? Are they solid or hollow and what are they cast in???...Don't mean to pry but they are so wonderful I can't help being curious about their inspiration and nature.

tango - they're in the Demesne of Birr Castle. They're cast in a 3:1 mix of rough-crushed Wicklow granite (which is very white) and white cement. They're 5 foot high by, I think, about 2 foot deep, 30 inches wide. They weigh about 3 tons each. The whole installation is called 'Theatre'.

Saw the pix. The back of the faces are even more brilliant than the front! Beautiful work! And if they are solid-cast, the installation must have been...well..."interesting", to say the least.

lol - it was! They were delivered on pallets, on a big lorry (truck) that the council used for things like moving bridges. My scanner isn't working for some reason, or I'd be able to post some pics of the installation. We used a backhoe loader and slings.

Took photographs of the photographs, so the quality isn't great. Also, loaded them up to photobucket in the wrong order. But...the attached album has a few pics of a mould being released, the heads loaded for delivery, and one of the heads being slinged into position.

The pic with people in it certainly brings home the scale of these beauties and the installation does indeed appear to have required military precision. All in all, quite a spectacular bit of work. If you get the chance, do post pix of the rear of the "audience" and one of the "actors" for those who've not seen them. Both of those features help tell the story very well. An aerial photograph is almost necessary to really take this work in...or maybe one of those 3-D, "walk-through" images that can be manipulated on the viewers computer.
