ugly lava rock water fall

I'm new to the hypertufa, I have made three little planters that came out ok but I would like to try a bigger project. I have an old "water feature" that I want to revive. It is covered with ivy (must kill) and it is made out of cement and big lava rocks. At one time I believe it was a waterfall with a pool. The whole thing is about 4 feet high in the back and goes down to a cement pool in the front that is about 3x4 feet. It is VERY ugly. I'm wondering if I could cover the lava rocks with the tufa mix to disguise the 70's ugliness. Do I just slap it on or is there a trick? How do I keep it from falling off or does the texture of the lava rock naturally bond with the cement? Any ideas would be great.
