How to keep a bird bath clean

I remember reading a couple of years ago a recipe for keeping a concrete birdbath free of all the green stuff that starts to grow with floating a few sticks of fresh lavender and a few other things. Does anyone recall or have any other natural, easy, pretty solutions?

I dump mine daily and scrub it with a wire brush. I let the cement dry in the sun for a bit and then refill it. There shouldn't be any algae if you do that daily, and the birdies will appreciate it.
