Garlic Help

I want to plant garlic for the first time.

I am preparing a raised bed for the garlic.

I have read alot about planting them but the one thing I have not see is do I remove the paper skin from the bulb before planting.

I know in michigan I am supposed to plant a har neck but I and going to try both and then mulch.

has anyone had any luck with planting garlic from grocery store or whole foods markets?

just break the head apart like you would for kitchen use, leave the outer skin on the cloves. plant in fall, after first frost.

I've planted naked cloves and they did OK but prefer those with the skins on.
Columbus Day is my target date for planting. Be sure to use lots of compost and side-dress with fetilizer in the early spring - it's a hungry crop.

Leave the paper on if possible... also, they recommend not to break apart the heads into cloves until planting time.

I grew both hardnecks and a few softnecks here in Buffalo successfully. Be sure to check out GW's Allium Forum at the link below... it's a little slow there but specializes in just alliums (onions, garlic, walking onions, leeks, shallots, flowering alliums, etc.)

Plant them just like crocuses, but shallower. So don't remove the papery skin, its a protective coat. I think the Columbus Day rule is for zones 6/7. You might want to plant yours 2 weeks earlier. They will appreciate the Fall time to develop roots.
