HELP!!! My first hypertufa is disappointing....

HELP!!

I spent last weekend making my hypertufa mix: 1 1/2 peat moss; 1 1/2 perlite; 1 portland cement. I added enough water to make it form a ball when squeezed....adding more if it seemed to dry out a bit.

I lined my forms, mostly pots , with plastic bags.....I formed a big one over a big oval galvanized pan covered in plastic.

I let them set almost 5 days before unmolding....and most broke apart.

After that length of time, the mix is still a dark brown and seems crumbly.

When does it harden? When does it turn that lovely gray?

Honestly I am so discouraged that I have all but given up hope of making these " simple" troughs.

The results, as you can see, were less than lovely.

Anyone out there who can give me some advice??

Also....has anyone used a basket as a form?

I shudder to think how difficult that would be to remove from the hypertufa !!!

I eagerly await advice...

Yvonne
