I wonder if it could be sap. Vines supposedly bleed a lot of sap if cut during the growing season. The only other thing I can think of is that they're actually eggs from some insect that likes your plant but someone more experienced might actually know.

*Of course, if you were one of the many flower and foliage gardeners, the answer would clearly be "grapes!". =D

Monarch butterfly eggs are translucent, creamy colored, and about 1/32 inch diameter. They are easy to see. But monarchs do not lay eggs on grapevines or the leaves, they only lay eggs on milkweed. My guess is that you are looking at an insect egg, likely a butterfly or moth. Just keep an eye on the eggs, in about a week they will hatch, and some sort of caterpillar will emerge. Chances are, the caterpillar will feed on the grape leaves, and do some damage. Sometimes the damage is minor, but not always.

I saw the same thing on my muscadines, but never did figure out what it was. Sometime later, I got borers in the vines and the entire arbor was killed. However, the sighting of the caviar like eggs and the death of the vines apparently were not related. I say this because you stated you got these caviar like eggs every year. Around the borer holes was pinkish jelly like substance. This occured about this time in May.

I wish I could be of more help, but after the death of the muscadines, I gave up on them and planted grapes more suited for my climate. Muscadines do better further South.

jean001, if its a normal physiological reactiion of grapes, whey doesn't it do this every year? I still have several grape vines, different varieties, and have for some years. But, I have only seen the substance once.

Yes, I believe that was what I had. There were a lot of them. I am sorry I missed your post. I have dial up and and this time of year I usually check the boards after working out in my garden and orchard all day. When I see a download, sometimes I will go to another post. I wish I had the time to read them all, but with dial up it would take all evening and into the night. In this case, I saw the translucent caviar in the subject and realized that was what I had had and never figured out what it was. I guess your post failed to pique my curosity, sorry!

we just found the mecca of monarchs while trimming a hedge. this (i can only assume) grapevine was sprawling accross the top of the hedges. I followed one of the butterflies to where it laid these eggs, so even though milkweed is their go-to….theyll lay eggs on this vine.
