Huh? Are they supposed to die after flowering? Sorry, can't help you if that's the case.

I'm not sure about alocasias, but I'll tell you about another aroid of mine that flowered and then went into decline. It was Dieffenbachia compacta(?). It had 2 blooms on it and I thought that was coolest thing ever. After the blooms died off, the plant just started to go down hill. Yellowing for no apparent reason and just overall did not look healthy and lush as it once did prior to the blooms.

I realize that some aroids are meant to flower, but I don't know about this one. I'd be inclined to cut it off before it bloomed. On the other hand, I know you are dying, as I would be, to see what the bloom will look like!

Well, IÂll share some information as best as I can Toni as I drag it out of the Âold memory bank LOL...

The reason you have trouble finding info about flowers and Alocasias is because Alocasias hardly, if ever, bloom indoors. ItÂs so rare that nobody remembers or thinks about it (or even writes about it in books...LOL).

But they do in fact bloom or Âmay bloom at any time during the growing season. From what I remember, flowers are spathes...mmm...about 4  5 inches long??. I donÂt think the bloom is anything to write home about LOL... I suppose thatÂs why Alocasias are much better known for their striking foliage. But youÂll let us know about the flower!

Anyhow, thatÂs all I can remember. Even my Âgazillion plant books donÂt talk much about flowering. Some say they Ânever flower indoors but I know they can, they just hardly ever.

But I donÂt think anything happens to the plant because of the blooming. I think you can rest easy! I know how difficult these plants can be. IÂm on my third one through my years of houseplant growing and finally succeeding (I hope..knock on wood!)

So take a deep breath, exhale! Ah, that's good, no? I think it's-a-gonna-be okay! Maybe you're doing a great job with it... :)

I grow my alocasias outdoors, so the fact they--or some of them anyway!--bloom isn't all that remarkable. They are aroids, like philodendrons and dieffs and calla lilies, so the flowers are standard spathe and spadix things. Some are beautiful, like calla lilies, and some are less dramatic, like peace lilies and the alos, colos, and xanthos I've seen so far. After the first few flowers I'd just as soon they'd get on with the business of making leaves, which is what we mostly grow them for! They do seem to put their strength into blooms OR leaves, not both.

I had three alocasias on north window in the shower. They all bloomed, and survived for next two years, and died ( I am trying to save them still) when we added a new bathroom, and stopped using that shower. They tend to loose some leaves but then new ones come. Since they were in the bathroom I sometimes forgot to water them, and soil was hard as a rock, but evidently moisture was enough for them. ( three showers every day). BTW flowers are nothing special, typical aroid.

You're pretty safe; My 'Polly's have bloomed occasionally, and they live on.

GH- I've heard that about Dieffenbachias before. I was skeptical, because I had 'Tropical Tiki' and it put out several flowers without declining. Then, about a year after the first set of blooms, it went on a blooming binge, put out loads of flowers, and then declined, exactly the way you described.

Nature, I have a set of binders w/over 1000 plant cards..but right now, they're buried in the back room..I can't get to them and they are heavy to lift..these pages may have info on Alo's..each back page has a section that discuses flowering. After I get plants outside I'll be able to reach my binders..lol

Green, I agree the flower isn't fantastic, but I get excited when plants bloom..doesn't take much to make me happy, but since plants are my life, it makes my day..

Senga, we take 3 showers a day in our home, too..maybe humidity helps. Plus I mist daily..Because I shower everyday, and the Alo's are buried behind other plants, it's easy for me to check the soil.
I'm sorry your plants are fading..give them a chance, they're forgiving. Even if all the leaves die I wouldn't toss. You never know when a leaf is going to pop up.

Oojen thanks for the confidence. Even though this plant isn't going to win any awards w/its 2 leaves, and another type of alo in the pot w/3 leaves, I'm happy it survied unlike other Alo's in the past.. I want to thank everyone for their help..Toni

One of the reasons I grow alos--and their cousins, colocasia and xanthosoma--is that they love heat and humidity, which we have in great abundance. I second the comment that they'll often come back even if they lose all their leaves--several times I've thought I lost one and even dumped their pots (but I've learned to pay attention to where I dump them!) and months or even in one case a year or more later had them show up. Alocasias have a tendency to rot if they're too cold and wet in the winter, and I guess what happened is most the rhizome rotted but left enough to start a small piece growing. Had the same thing happen, more or less, with a hardy gesneriad. Thought it had died when I decided to pot it out, but there was nothing in the pot. I dumped the pot very carefully where I had intended to plant it, and even put the label with it. Later this spring I thought I saw what looked like a bunch of old AV leaves dumped out, and realized it was that gesneriad growing well. I swear there was nothing in that pot!

Toni, that flower is not that bad. It's actually quite charming. My Aglaonemas flower every year like that but I've never seen any Alocasia do so. The most recent Alocasia that I have is doing better than any other I've ever had. It's growing new leaves, one after the other, like crazy. I'm afraid to touch it LOL...in fear that I'll curse it or upset it.

You shouldn't worry that your plant only has two leaves. This Alocasia that I have now got down to two also when I first brought it home. It dropped quite a few and one of the stocks was left bare but I decided to keep it. The plant began by declining at first, almost as if it was protesting the change from greenhouse to home. So I shuffled it around a bit until I got it close to bright light. (It kept leaning forward towards the window). I finally settled on a spot for it when it started putting out new leaves in gratitude LOL... Now it's growing like a weed and no longer leaning towards the window. It's stable...for now...and I'm finally relaxed...LOL... I love this group of plants and don't want to give up on them. They're so beautiful, it's worth the effort.

So all that to say that even if your plant went completely bald, don't toss it. It can revive. And two healthy leaves is pretty darn good LOL....

Nature, actually I've two types of Alocasias in one pot..the one that's blooming is the A.Amazon and the second is a velvety types..(smaller)
Like I said it's adjacent a west window, and one leaf was leaning towards the window, but I guess the light was too strong cause the one leaf nearest the window started turning brown. Oh I'm not going to toss this plant..lol..
I usually take it out in summer, but haven't gotten that far yet. I'm doing so many plants at a time..Just got all my citrus which took days w/the rain. I've also been working on the outside garden..I need to get out there and do work, but we watch movies on Sat nights so I'll save it for tomorrow. I just hope it doesn't rain again..lol..Everytime I start doing outside work, it starts either drizzling or pouring. I don't like working in mud. Anyway, thanks for your help..Toni

My Alocasia macrorrhiza has formed a bud in the greenhouse (shelter from the gales). I have moved it out into the garden 2 weeks ago and the bud is still growing. I don't get the impression it will be very exciting though.

I've never grown these before and only had this one since february, so I dont know if they are monocarpic or not yet.

Toni, I guess a lot has been said already, but to add my two cents... my A. x amazonica bloomed while spending the summer outside. It proceeded to lose 2 of its 4 leaves and languished considerably. Now it has 4 leaves again and looks great. I think the plant devotes a lot of energy to 'giving birth'!

My alocasia has its first flower & I have 3 very terrific photos of it. I have had the plant 4-5 months now, and it LOVES where i've put it (kitchen window sill). If u wish the photos, respond to this & i'll get them to u somehow.

My alocasia regal shields just put out three flowers (I cut them off) and I’m very worried it will go dormant. I have it inside by a bright SE window and was very surprised it flowered (in February, no less!).

My question is - WHERE will a new leaf come from?! It’s a huge plant with one growth point - the newest leaf’s petiole. These flowers came from the last leaf, so where is the growth point now?? Do I have to wait for a pup or side shoot and hope the current leaves hold on? My only hope is that since it was able to continue to put flowers out even though I cut the last one off; there is somewhere it can grow from.

Someone with experience please do tell me where the next leaf will come from!
