Question about this site

I have been coming here for awhile now and dont know how to view new posting after I have read the older postings. Is there some way to to view the newer posting without going from the top down to where you left off?

I go to a couple of other forums and they all have a button to click where you can view the posting that were posted after you read them all and went somewhere else.

One is a homesteading site, where they have this little arrow pointing down, that you click to go to the newer postings. Another forum I go to there is a box that says "new".

Does this site have anyway to do this or do I just have to start from the beginning til I find where I last read?

Thanks.

This is a bare-bones platform so you need Firefox to do what you want - FF automagically holds your place on the page when you refresh.

Even that won't help when you come back to a thread you've read that has new responses. Bare bones, indeed!

I asked this question once because I'm spoiled by other forums that have the option you speak of. Someone asked me if it was really that hard to scroll down or something to that effect. I forget the exact wording. ha.

    Ok, well thanks all.

schoolhouse, I guess I am just spoiled from the options on the other sites.

This site has few of the refinements of a forum running on php. This site is still the best though because of the people. That and the people who run the site don't allow jerks to go to far before they are shut down. There are a lot of sites with better features but as far as I'm concerned there is no better gardening site.

Oh, please dont get me wrong, I love this site and appreciate the people and their knowledge.

But I dont come on here every day and when you have some conversations that can go on for a long time, I have to search for where I left off. I also was just wondering if there was something that I wasnt getting.

What I used to do, when I was newer and less familiar with this huge site, was I'd save threads I was following to either a favorites or bookmarks folder. Yes, GW is a bit archaic, but I too don't mind because of the folks and have come to really like the rather simple format.

It's worth it for the people and the chat, but it has got to be the most annoying site on the internet.

Those darn animated ads take forever to down load, and you have to be so careful how you scroll down or loud ads pop up, covering what you are trying to read.

I hate the talking ads, since I am on the computer while family members are asleep and I am trying to not make any noise.

I realize that the ads pay for the site, but the ads on this site are so invasive, slow loading, and obnoxious.

Yeah, a "first unread" button would be heaven on the longer threads. A way to edit after posting would be nice. A button to click to report spam would be nice.

Oh well. Nothing to do but put up with it until I find a better forum to move to.

I'm with Oregon.... I've been on this site for a very long time. It basically is the same as the first time i logged on (except the ads have GROWN a LOT). There are a lot of other forums popping up on these subjects. I have noticed over the years how certain topics (like citrus/bananas) have moved elsewhere (certain people have stayed here). You would think that with ad revenue they could at least update to something 2004ish in the software dept. Editing would be AWESOME! Its just crap, but there are a few posters here i really like, so i come back...for now.

I don't see any ads. If you will stop by the link below, someone there can tell you how to be rid of them once and for all. Just let them know what browser you are using.

I look for Garden Web to maybe someday be incorporated into ivillage forums which I don't care for near as well as Garden Web.

In some cases editing would be nice, but imho, on the exchange forums I think it is nice that things can't be changed...like what was agreed to or something. There are a few shysters every once in a while on the exchanges.

    Sue...usually a lurker here.

My understanding is that the former owners looked into moving to more modern forum software. The problem was they could not find a way to move all the threads to the new software. Everything would be lost and the site would start from scratch. Personally I think it would be worth it. They could leave the old site up so you could search it for information and start a new site. If something was really important a thread could be cut and pasted by into the new site by any member who felt the desire to. I wish they would but I know how wishing goes so I won't be holding my breath. For now I will just be thankful for the site as it is.

    I have been:

    Frustrated by the ads . . .

    Aggravated by the spammers . . .

Imbareassed by the absence of edit . . .

Still, it IS the people. And, as Chemocurl says, this is a "huge site" and I'll be darned if there aren't people all over it! Almost seems like, if you have a slightest interest -- there's a forum.

And she knows what she's talking about. Chemocurl has been of help to me back when things were a lot more interesting on the "test forum." Of all places! I used to go there to try to figure things out and Chemocurl, as she has in this thread, would offer suggestions.

. . . just a lot of helpful people on GW.

oreganwoodsmoke I don't get any ads or popups either. I used to use the firefox browser with Noscript and Adblocker and still got some annoyances but now I use google chrome which has a built in adblocker and I rarely have to manually block anything.

Yes there's so much info here I rarely have to ask anything anymore. If you use the right terms in the search box you can find whatever you want in seconds and for you that don't know there is a search box toward the bottom of each forum where you can search just that forum.

Thanks GW for not changing because new is not always better.
