Germination was spotty on my spring crop. Seeing that, I decided to follow the method of a gardener friend of mine who starts spinach in a flat and sets out seedlings. It's a bit tedious but that way a uniform row without a lot of gaps can be achieved.

I sowed my spring spinach yesterday. The days have been very hot, so after watering well, I rigged up a shade cloth from metal hoops and an old sheet. I water every morning when it's still very cool. I've been using this technique for years.

I find that spinach seeds need to be kept damp to start. So, I take out a furrow, place the seed, cover with vermiculite, then water.
This gets a good start and a full row.

I've had good luck getting germination rates up by covering the rows with floating row covers (right on the soil) and then watering daily through the row cover. I leave it on until the temps cool and insect populations decrease.

Laceyvail, when you say spring spinach, can you tell me what you do to over-winter it please? I accidentally overwintered some last year under straw and snow. I'd like to do it intentionally this year! :-)

I don't do anything, though I usually cover with a row cover, mainly to discourage any animals that might get into the garden. Spinach is really tough. In early March I trim off the yellow leaves and side dress with compost and a little dried blood, for nitrogen. It takes off.

I've always had a terrible time trying to get it to germinate (some of that due to trying to direct sow and figure out when's the best time to do that down here) but the best luck I had was when I put the seeds in water/ziplock bag in the fridge and sowed after about a week (actually, I forgot about them) Nearly every one came up!

These I limped along through the winter and they really took off growing late Feb/early Mar. Time to get some started for next year.

Here in Southern State they carries different seeds for Spring planting and fall planting, therefore I thought you don't plant fall spinach seeds for spring and vise versa, they probably will bolt very quickly just like some of the greens that are only good to plant in the fall, but would not do well when trying to plant in the spring.
