So. Cal. apricot pruning

I have "dwarf" apricot tree that has already produced all of the apricots it's going to for the season. They were delicious. The new branches are almost completely blocking the sun from my tomatoes, and I would like to do some pruning now, but I don't want to limit next year's crop by cutting the wrong branches or doing it prematurely. It seems that apricots only grew on branches that were at least a year old, so how much of the new growth should I prune this year, if any? If I leave the tree alone, it takes up most of the space in my yard and shades other plants that need sun. Any advice? Gary
