How do find the right architect?

We are in northern VA and are struggling to start the process of designing our first custom home. I see a lot of interesting designs from architects all over the country, but nothing that suits are taste locally. Is it ok go work with someone who isn't local?

I would recommend an architect in your area. I typically do residential work within a reasonable driving distance to keep the travel expenses to a minimum. I also think an Architect needs to see the site and have at a number face to face meetings for the best understanding of your needs. A local or regional architect also knows the local and state code better than an outsider. It is best that they are licensed by the state in which your project is located. Otherwise technically they are not an architect in that state.

Start with a call or email to the head of the nearest AIA chapter and ask for recommendations. Also ask contractors, homeowners, engineers about who is a good residential architect. It may take a number of emails and phone calls but you will land on 5-6 architects that will fit your project.
