I think you risk having them go to seed the next year instead of growing nice and fat and sweet.

My leeks routinely self-sow. Seedlings germinate in the fall and more again in the spring, depending upon location, and whether or not there was something shading the seeds that was later removed, that sort of thing.

They won't bloom the first year, regardless of fall germination, as they are too small.

Sorry, but your husband wins this round. If you sow seeds now, they will emerge in the spring, fairly early.

I used to start my leek seedlings, but no longer. Of course, I am in zone 7, but you are in zone 5, so what works for me may not work for your area. Each year I left some seeks over the winter, early in Spring (around June-July)they tend to want to flower, but I cut the bulbs off before they bloom. These leeks will gradually declined and dried out, but come early fall, underneath these "dead" leeks, a small bunch of tender new leeks will sprout out. They are my new leek seedlings. I separate and plant them in early fall and use them for the fall and next Spring. And the cycle repeated itself. I still have my left over packet of leek seeds since.

Drat! I hate it when he's right, now he'll keep rubbing it in. I'm still doubttfull , probably because of the harsh winters we have here (Canada) but I'm going to go ahead and try with some left over seeds. Can't hurt. I'll also try what you do homegro. Thanks. Marg
