I could imagine a darker blue paint on the brick and wood panel on the ceiling to replace the tile and then painting the beams white. It would go with your nautical themed decor.

I think it's a cute FP, too, but w/ your nautical scheme, assuming you want to stay with that, it could use some lightening up. One idea would be to do what my mom did - she used some light colored latex (I think) paint and just dry-brushed a brick FP with the wall color - you still saw the brick but it was much lighter and tied into the new color scheme much better. Another idea would be to tile over the brick - maybe with river rock-style mosaic squares. If you want to keep your white walls, consider using a gray btwn the "beams" on your ceiling, perhaps by purchasing inexpensive driftwood type flooring and installing it overhead.

I think I would aim to balance out the fireplace a little more. Head to Michaels, World Market, etc. and purchase a large urn/vase (I am thinking around 3 ft. high) made out of wood, straw, something casual and warm. In this I would add some curly willow branches (Michael's) and place on the right side of the fireplace. That is the only thing I would have on that level. I'd remove those two small vases with the grasses.

That should pretty much fill that right hand section to the ceiling.

Hi! I redid our ceilings this year. In order to increase the insulation I tore the old ceiling down and then drywalled. The fireplace was painted brick and we refaced it with very thin rock slabs. The finished product looks great. Have fun.

I would consider changing out the square celiing tiles...a white-washed wood maybe inexpensive but provide a nice update. Perhaps framing in the top part of the fire place with painted white wood and mirror and painting the light wood trim white or whatever you choose as the wall color (a light grey) If you do not use the fireplace you can add driftwood in a cute seagrass basket and remove the doors...I would also consider updating the ceiling fan to something more simple many websites have newer styles that are more efficient and will fit with your style

Here's another thought: Remove the mantel entirely and add a book case next to the fireplace just stacked cubes over the tinder box. Use that area for nautical display. You may want to replace the red tile on the top of the fireplace base with black to tie in with other black you have in the room. For the ceiling just sheetrock & painting seem the best to avoid the confusion of too many different materials. Here again either white or black beams.

Sure would love to see more pictures of the room and what is on the opposing wall. Having the entire picture helps decide so many things, i.e., leaving brick as is, painting brick, colors to be used, added visual weight such as bookcases, or not., etc., etc., etc.

Like one of the above poster's idea to remove the black glass fireplace surround. Is that possible?
