Fruit tree from suckers

I had a tree that was a flowering Plumb I was told. Occasionally it would bear very small plumbs. When the tree died I allowed a sucker to grow. I trained it, and after about 4 years it flowered. It now produces white flowers and green leaves, original tree had pink flowers and red leaves. Tree also now has deadly sticker/spikes on limbs. It grows a bit wildly and FAST, but I keep it trimmed and it is very nice. Now it is producing cherries (looks like Bing) sporadically and they have tweaked my interest. Are they edible and safe? What should I expect from this new tree from old stump? It is clearly different in nature from it parent. I assume some kind of hybrid originally, now reverting to one of its original parents? Sorry to be a neophyte..
