Green Peppers

Hi, everyone. First visit here, but I'm a regular in the woodworking forum.

I've been growing green peppers (California Wonder and the like) for the last few years. I transplant them in mid-May. The problem I'm having is that they get really big plants but don't start setting blossoms until late September or early October, in which case it's a race to get them grown before the killing frost.

My first thought was I was putting on too much nitrogen, so this year, I did not fertilize, but only added some composted horse manure, worked into the soil well. Same results. We've had some hot years and some wet years without any difference.

I grew up on a truck farm and my grandfather grew thousands of pepper plants and don't ever remember him having a problem like this (NE Ohio).

Thanks in advance and hoping for a better 2015.
