Salal and evergreen huckleberry are native to the Oregon Coast, as are some types of barberry (including Oregon Grape).

Actually, if it was recently, and in Oregon, it was probably a Serviceberry. I believe Honeyberries are ripe in the spring. Raintree sells Serviceberries.

Serviceberry is a good suggestion although it is not a plant one would expect right on the coast. It is normally a plant of open woodland and drier areas. The serviceberries I have eaten were quite mealy rather than juicy, but ones near the coast might be plumper and juicier. Serviceberry grows on a shrub or small tree that is not dense.

Perhaps pesky1 will tell us where on the Oregon Coast he was. Ten or twenty miles inland makes all the difference in berries encountered.

It was in Walport, about mid-coast Oregon. We were in uplands, about a mile from the ocean, but in the mid-mountain area. It is mildly wooded there, lots of blackberries and salmonberries, little oregon grape in this location. Some salal, but primarily it's conifers, ash, and herbivory plants that grow in disturbed areas.

I'm pretty familiar with what types of edible plants there are in the area...so we were confident they were safe to eat (we don't eat mushrooms! and I know what the poisonous plants are in the area) I suspect this was a cultivar that was spread by wildlife, since it was just a lone bush mixed in with some salmonberries and poison oak on the side of the horse trail.

Good call, Carla. Since pesky1 was in mountain ash territory, there could certainly be serviceberry around.
