Watermelon Ripeness

Just harvested a dissappointing first yellow doll watermelon. Thought it was ripe because I can't imagine it being heavier, had low solid tone when thunked, was really yellow on ground side, neighboring tendril seems to be going, can feel ribs for couple days. Was unsure about blossom end still being contrasting stripes and no smell (but it is a watermelon), not certain tendril was going rather than damaged. Inside the seeds were hard and crunchy but mostly white, a bit of black on some. There was still alot of white near the rind and the yellow color could have been more developed overall. It wasn't easy to cut into. It tasted like a grocery store watermelon, not sweet occassionally aspiriny, had excellent watermelon eating texture. Writing this I'm thinking I should also have pushed the skin to see if it slips (?) and really tugged hard at the stem instead of cutting it (I was really hungry and have been tugging at that stem for days and really don't know how much pressure is diagnostic). Flesh didn't yield to fingertip pressure outside but I wasn't trying to damage it either and was grabbing it in a gecko-like manner. Does it sound like I was just impatient; and how (other than eating first) will I judge harvest time better? Or am I growing melons badly and they will likely all be tasteless? Thanks
