You could grow it for fruit I think, but you have no way of knowing what pollinated it. Often times crab apple trees are used as pollinators so you might get an odd apple. Apples are rarely true to type when grown from seed, except for a few varieties.

Thanks for that. Well to be honest if i just got crabs that would be better than the plum tree we have! Tons of plums that no one eats and loads on the lawn-at least the birds would eat the crabs-i don't think they like plums!

I once raised 3 volunteer apple seedlings. One turned out to be a beautiful red blooming crabapple. Another was a very large and vigorous early apple that I didn't care for. The third one bears the largest, early, and nice tasting red apples.

Maricybele, technicaly yes you can but you're better off taking a piece of mature wood rather than a branch end. The reason is simple and beautiful. If you root cuttings from a branch that has flowered and borne fruit the maturity is carried over into the cutting and so you don't have to wait so long before your new plant flowers.
