From the texture and the differing sheen levels I'm guessing this is a material like Venetian plaster. You're not going to get this effect with paint unless you have a very skilled faux painter.

The walls around the fireplace are American Clay Plaster "Sugar Loaf". The dark wall beyond is also American Clay Plaster and was a custom mixed color that FAB Architecture in Austin, TX specified.

The dark brown walls are definatly venetian plaster ( chocolate brown ) burnished on the last coat to give you those beautiful highs and lows, characteristic of venetian plaster. A skilled seasoned decorative painter in your area shoud be able to achieve this, do samples first and ask to see other plaster project they have done before hiring them. Karen
