Where do you store large piles of mulch, sweet peet, compost, decomposing leaves, etc.?

I'm going to put them near my compost bins and garden shed, on the edge of about an acre of mostly open land, between a large fenced-in vegetable garden and a wooded area. I can't decide if I should put up a nice fence between it and my vegetable garden and make it (the fence area) as attractive as I can, or just try to keep the area tidy and hope it's sort of an attractive functional feature.
