If you are considering slipcovers for your leather, be certain to put down either a non-slip rug pad or batting between the leather and the slipcover, to keep it from scooting. Also, you can take a pole and place it lengthwise on your sofa and jamb it down far as it will go between back and seats. That will keep your slipcover from moving forward toward the floor.

OK, after you read this, try out the following and repost (I'm not bossy, am I?)

Imagine a banquette under the window in the kitchen. Pull your table over there and place the two chairs on the other side, so that you would be sitting at the table and looking out the window.

Pull your sofa over to directly face tv. Pull in on to the area rug so that at least the two front feet are on the carpet. Be sure to allow enough room to walk behind the sofa.

Use the large chair over in the corner where the sofa is. Create a nice reading nook.

Understand the dog toys. I have mine in a large floor basket.

We will have to work on ideas to hide the playstation components!

I've moved a few things around. I like the feel of this, it is more of an intimate setting which I like!!! But I am still unsure on a few things...

1) I still have the stupid awkward corner. If I move the chair too far over, you won't be able to see the TV... or if I move it too far over the other way then I have to push the couch back so far that there is no walking area. Should I just get over it?

2) Obviously if I keep this, I'll need to change up/rearrange the wall decor.. which is fine, because I am about to have to take it all down to paint. Any suggestions?

3)Any suggestions for the bare wall (well, now it has a picture of a palmetto tree and boat but that will be coming down)? Maybe an old wooden ladder with a pretty blanket or two hanging on it? Or an old door just as an accent?

4) Tables and lamps... what to do, what to do? They don't have to stay in here. I've played around a bit with them but can't seem to figure out what to do about end tables for the couch and/or loveseat.

For the kitchen, we are currently building a storage bench with a "headboard"(like the picture below). I also can't push my table back there because the door outside is hiding behind that corner.

I think pcmom is on the right track with your new sofa placement. It already looks much better. I'm going to make just one suggestion, but it is kind of a sweeping one. You need to declutter, and I'm not talking about the dog toys, which are fine (love the dog!) There are too many little decorative objects everywhere--all over walls, tables, tops of cabinets, counters, etc. I'd much prefer to see a few nice paintings, or an interesting series of prints, or a series of well-framed art photographs on the walls rather than all of the array of objects you have up now. Too many small objects on the walls, no matter how well chosen or carefully placed (and yours are both) have the effect of cluttering the room. I'd like to see maybe a series of three different photographs or prints in identical frames across the wagon wheel wall, or one large horizontal painting. I'd like to see nothing on top of the kitchen cabinets, only a few small appliances on your kitchen counters, and only maybe one larger or three smaller well-placed decorations (vases, etc.) on each of the various tables in the living room, the mantel, etc. When there is too much to look at your eye goes into visual overload and it all becomes an undifferentiated mass. If empty "awkward" corners bother you, that is where a large plant in a beautiful pot comes in handy. Anyway, that is my best advice for the room. Here are some photos of rooms (in different styles) that take a more minimalist approach to accessories and artwork, while still feeling warm and inviting:

I must say, I am liking this much more. If the chair is a favorite place for tv watching, try leaving it where it is and angling it more in line with your sofa. This will leave a triangle area between the two. Put one of the floor lamps into that wedge. Now you can also do some reading while sitting in two different spots.

One way to fill in that "awkward corner" is to have fuller drapes that extend out much farther. This doesn't mean to cover the window, only to give a fuller look. (Plants or your basket of branches would help fill also).

To keep with the farm house and airy look, think about unlined linen panels. You have two matching windows on each side of fireplace. I would hang the rods higher and wider. I would see how swagging the panels to one side only looked (frame the fireplace and soften the edge of the windows.)

Window treatments are a great place to seek out a designer (which I'm not! Me just lady whose has been decorating own house, reading about decorating, etc. for 30 years!). If that isn't in the budget, there are lots of places to order: Country Curtains, Pottery Barn, even Company Store. Go full and long, little puddling of the material on the floor adds richness.

Like the painting you mentioned, but looks too big for that space, plus there appears to be no room for a table under it to "ground" it. Plus, that light switch is right in the way. First thing: when you paint, paint the switch plates also (or go to website "Switch Hits"). Maybe just a slightly smaller painting there.

For your wall arrangements: steal ideas from this site and start an idea book. Like all your ideas: old door, quilts, etc. To save your newly painted walls you can tape up outlines of your thoughts before nailing up.

I like your bench idea for the kitchen table. Does look like window area needs something under it. Maybe a rustic bench with storage below.

Change the area rug to a animal print rug or large brown white striped one. Pillows for sofa in a coordinating print in medium to dark colors (light pillows look like stamps on a package) and make them big with fringe. Move floor lamp to single chair position and for sofa buy large tables and table lamps in a metalic/ or color to go with kitchen window treatments. Try to make this a large overall room. Cover the kitchen chairs with fabric seats or chair pads. Do a little at a time and do the trial and error method. Agree get rid of the little wall clutter and make a statement with big painting or architectural piece. Try the wagon wheel behind the chiar. Good luck.

Color...you need color. Everything is so beige & brown. Walls and floor are substantially the same shade (at least in the photos).

Might look great to make an arrangement by adding just a couple more wagon wheels to go with the one you have already. Nothing else hanging except for 3 wheels. Less is more: Feeny is right again!

Also, take away the small white table on the stairway and both things hanging there. Try moving the clock (that is hanging at the base of the stairs) over to where the painting at the end of the sofa is hanging. Looks like just the right size.

The picture will work somewhere else, maybe on the wall going up the stairs!

First of all, I had thought about that with the curtains.. Higher and wider. I am glad someone else said something because I wasn't sure if it would look goofy with my big ol' curtain rods... which I am considering painting an ivory color.. Opinions?

I agree with the clutter... I am so glad yall pointed it out because I honestly didn't really realize it. My mom's house is cluttered and I guess I inherited it without knowing!! :)

I am now trying to decide what do do with the console tables and the wall where the picture is too big. I am considering moving the window to the wall where the palmetto tree picture is... It is a good size for that space. I also am considering making a bookshelf out of crates to put there. I really like the look and we have a lot of antique books and pharmacy bottles that we could display in it, plus it would be small enough in size to still have walking space.

I looovvvvveee my rug so I don't want to get rid of it.. I think it will look a lot better when I get my slipcovers in (should be here at the end of the week!!).. they are in a beige/linen color.

I will keep posting pictures as I progress and appreciate y'alls advice.. Keep it comin'!

Just wanted to share this inspiration room that has a distinct bright, farmhouse feel with a leather sofa and blue gray walls. I agree with other posts that light curtains, a more dramatic area rug, and some well-placed large accessories will help to achieve the look you are going for. Have fun!

I like the idea of painting the curtain rods.

HI -- Both previous posters have good ideas but here is my bit. When you do a country style there is a fine line where it can get cluttered. You have a small space so that makes it more difficult style to do.I think your wanting more of a new country style. So you have to have fewer but more well chosen items. The problem you are having now is you need closed storage. First -- don't waste money on slip covers . You can't really use slipcovers on leather furniture, they slip around and look sloppy all the time and they will drive you crazy. It's OK to have bare spots and don't angle things in corners. So fewer little decor items and bigger special items. I would have a textured weave or semi-sheer full drapes- you can hang the rod higher for a little more modern look.Then in front of each window have small matching ( pine?)cabinet.That will house the game stuff. If you look at your room now everything is dark. The sofa and chair are fine but it would look better to have lighter colored furniture items like natural wood or painted items. Maybe painting part of the dining set would lighten things a bit.

The leather furniture is not bad, and I agree that you won't like slipcovers on leather. The biggest thing I see is that a few items are out of scale. The wagon wheel could be a statement all by itself...the other items on the wall are too small and spaced too far apart. If you want to have them on the wall push them closer together and define the space with them. The table in the corner of the stairs has too much on it, the clock above it is too high, and the lamp over there looks out of place. I suggest a persian style rug,or something with a big design statement. Use some pillows with pop...overused word, but orange, green or red, or bright turquoise will work with the brown. You might look to bring it together with a splash of color-orange and turquoise. Remember~Less is more.
