Am I Off Base??!!

I am planning to have a 4ftwide x 8ftlong x 1ftdeep bog garden that ends up pouring into my 10ftllongx6ftwide x 4ft deep pond where fish and lilies will live. So Far I've planned to do a drain...somehow...and stop it off till I can afford an external pump...and just use what I have for now which is the sub pump and bioforce filterw/uv, which will flow into the bog garden and then into the pond. I have been looking at the waterfalls and such here, and am wondering if I should bother with the bog thing? I have the pond liners and just thought I'd add a bog feature since I have it but does that work? Or do you not do that? Reasons? Sheesh, the hole is sitting there and I feel so overwhelmed with all these decisions as I have only a limited supply of funds and am trying to do this right with a drain and such, but now am wondering if I should just make some kind of waterfall? I know I am rambling but HELP!!!! Jane

Hi, Jane I need to get some sleep but I will say a little bit. The passage of water from the bog area doesn't absolutely require a waterfall. It can also allow flow from a higer level through a veggie filter to a lower level. The veggies roots form a sort of dam so you don't end with the bog in the pond. More later. Sandy

Hi Jane,I tried to find the post of Fred's lesson on building and maintaining a bog plus one other post but at the moment I am having no luck. I guess the posts were too long ago.(And DH wonders why I make hardcopies of stuff!) I think I remember making a hardcopy of the full Fredsbog and as a last resort I can try to remember how to use my scanner or send you a hardcopy. The post in the link below is a shortened version of Fredsbog which is a great tutorial. I'll get back to you with more but I don't have a lot of time this afternoon. Sandy

Our bog filter is a little different than what you are planning, but hopefully the link below will be helpful in some way. Good Luck!

Sherry, THAT is exactly what I'm thinkin'!!! Cept I wasn't thinking of any pipes and stuff, just plants in planters to live there in a shallow bed, and then into the pond with a small shelf type overflow..just like the one in your pics!! It's pouring rain AND trying to snow today!!! SHEESH!!! Oh well, at least I'll have a good plan of action to set this pond up! I sure like the pond doc tutorial, would love to have a drain with aeration and the extra flow tubes...niiiccceee!!!

Sherry, love your pond. I see your bog has a liner. Is your pond lined also? How large is your pond that the bog flows into? LxW? I am wanting to put in a good size pond but would love to go without mechanical filters. Thanks

Sherry, thank you for posting that. I tried to locate that particular post since I remembered it from about two years ago, but failed to find it. It is a great tutorial for that kind of filtering system. This time I will make sure to have a hard copy as well as on my favorites list.
Jane, This is a very good example but remember there are other ways to build a good bog/plant filtration system. You might want to research other ways before you commit. Sandy

Jane, Sandy is right-- there are as many different ways to build a bog as we discovered when we started researching. I really like the idea of a "run-through" bog like you are thinking about. Not having to worry about pipes getting clogged, etc. would be a big plus! I think if you water flow rate is slow enough to give the plants time to filter it should work well.

Goodlife, yes the pond is lined as well and is approx. 30ft x 15ft.
