It may bounce back, I see a few viable roots there. It looks pretty dehydrated. Be sure you are watering the plant thoroughly. Spritzing with a spray bottle is helpful in a dry environment, but at least once a week, the plant and bark mix needs to be completely soaked, and then completely drained. I either set mine under the faucet in the sink for a minute or two, or I immerse it in a container full of water for a few minutes. Then I take the pots out and gently shake all the excess water out.

Thanks! I gave it a good soak today and dang if some of the roots didn't green up a little...I'm gonna lose the new spike but maybe can save the plant itself!

so...I removed phal from it's pot today to check the roots, which seem healthy. Will re-pot in a clear container and hope for the best? wondering if it's worth trying to resurrect it or just ditch the poor thing? Can't tell if it has crown rot as I don't know what to look for. the entire top of the plant appears dry and dead, but the roots look happy. Thoughts?

You could (as a last ditch effort) pot the roots, put in a bright spot and hope they send up a basal keki. I've had that happen once but it was in Spring.

The roots look alive, but without leaves to feed them your chances are slim. But weirder things have happened!

If I were you, I'd send the roots to orchid heaven and start over with a nice healthy plant.
