It could be Lysimachia quadrifolia (Whorled Loosestrife).
Or, there's a similar looking plant that appears to have whorled leaves but actually has 2 leaves that are so deeply dissected they look like 6. I can't remember what it is or what the flower looks like. Frustrating!

Here is a link that might be useful: Whorled Loosestrife

Other plants with that arrangement:

Medeola virginiana (Indian cucumber) - usually found in a wooded area, streamsides, etc.

Whorled coreopsis - usually found in a sunnier place.

Would help to know more about where (e.g., habitat) you found this than just the city/state.

Or culvers root Veronicastrum virginicum.

It couldn't be Medeola virginiana (Indian cucumber), esh_ga, because that only has one 5-9 whorl like that, then a whorl of 3 at the top.

Indeed these plants have 6 whorled leaves and almost all of them are found in partly shady areas near rocks. In fact, they are found at the edge of heavily wooded areas near openings open to a meadow.

I don't see too many of these plants (and they are sometimes hard to find) is why I'm a little curious about the ID. Also, this specimen in the photo is kinda sickly looking...they usually are more fleshy looking than these.

Also, these plants have a small yellow flower at the end much like the ones from the URL provided (www.ncwildflower.org/index.php/plants/details/lysimachia-quadrifolia/).

thanks

smkymtn1drer, we've had this discussion before that plants can be variable when it comes to number of leaves/leaflets. It was not out of the realm of possibility.

I agree that it wasn't as likely as other things, but there wasn't a lot of information to go on and I was just making suggestions.

You and I have had this discussion before, esh_ga? Don't think so. But I can't stand it when people are haughty or superior-acting, and here I've come off that way myself. Of course it was a reasonable suggestion! Sorry I was abrupt. :)

No, I meant that we have had that discussion on this forum before, not you and I personally. ;)
