David Austin roses in Texas sells bareroot roses on what I think is Dr. Huey roots. Everything I have purchased has been growing well and I havent seen any virus markings on the plants.

Dr. Huey is held to be preferred for SoCal because of its tolerance for alkaline conditions -- but Fortuniana seems to work well here, too.
And the long-life and success of old, old, formerly-rootstock plants of Ragged Robin (Gloire des Rosomanes) seems to me to argue that it was also a pretty darned good rootstock for our area.

Own-root works well for a lot of cultivars. Over time I've had better performance from most own-roots than from Dr. Huey grafteds. Of course, YMMV.
