I have a gardening question. I didn't realize NY was zone 7 like me. Are your elephant ears in pots that you take in for the winter? Do your impatiens come back or are these garden center plants each spring? Any successful perennial stuff out there?

That seems like vay too small a pond for so many fish. They look very crowded IMO.

chas045...we don't have elephant ears, only Taro (pointy leaf on one side) and lotus (round leaf)
the lotus are planted in big tubs sunk in the ground
next to the pond (there is one next to the small dock)

The lotus stays in the post all winter, we cut it back in late fall, and cover the pots with filled leaf bags to
keep the plant warm over the winter.

We take in several of the small taros and keep them in the basement over the winter in tubs of water, and put them
back out in the spring.

this is the lotus planted outside the pond, when it
is in bloom. The pot we have it in, is buried at ground
level and surrounded with rocks and ground cover plants.
It looks like it's in the pond.

It's ideal, as most backyard ponds are not big enough to
house these enormous beautiful plants... this lotus grows to over 6 ft tall.
As you can see, it looks like elephant ears.

Taros can grow to be over 6 ft tall as well.

Hi Joann, Thanks for the lotus pic and the Taro closeup. Wiki says that EE and Taro are essentially the same thing. I have been taking mine in but putting them in the window with impatiens in the same pot. A solution for the winter blahs. The rest end up in the garage somewhere (stacked up when the leaves die back). I still have one eating up a window in the dining room.

That lotus is beautiful. I had never even made the effort to know what they looked like. Now I guess I'll have to find out how to get one.
