marginal plants

I'm having trouble understanding how to grow marginal plants on the ponds edge. The pond is rubber lined, and my shelf at the top edge of the pond is about 6 inches deep. I'd like to grow some rushes, pickerel weed, golden club, lobelia cardinalis on this edge. I don't think it would look nice with black plastic ponds around the edge. So....do I cut the black plastic pots down so they are flush with the water surface? Do I use clay pots for a nicer look? Do clay pots work well on the edge? Are there plants that I just bare root into some rocks and gravel on this edge? Do I need to worry about their roots going through the liner? Is that a stupid question. Any good newbie books I should look into?

Thanks.
