without a constant source of oxygen the aerobic bacteria (the good stuff) will quickly turn anerobic (the bad stuff). I suggest daily water changes of at least 10%until you get a new pump.

also, when you add the water, put a spray attachment on the hose so is shoots a jet into the pond adding lots of O2. And if its going to be awhile I would go get a small pump over at Home Depot or something just to get you by.

go to Walmart or somewhere and buy a cheap air pump and stone and drop it in the pond.....or pick up a cheap fountain pump and make it splash back into the water....anything to keep a little circulation and some air exchange.

Thanks, y'all -- I do have an assortment of smaller pumps around that I use to make little fountains. I'll gang them up in the pond, and of course the big one still works intermittently. Will also follow the advice to refresh the water by at least 10%. (I have new puppies so I'm home all day for awhile.)
