One would expect to see the edible sprouts around the stalk on such a mature plant, is this a test / have they been removed, or eaten by pests?

I'm not sure it is that far along in development, the sprouts may in fact be yet to come.

Any reason to think it's not Collards?

I'd vote with Salt. It's not quite right for sprouts ... and I see an awful lot of them. But I've never seen a collard plant except in pictures.

Ya I also initially thought if this is brussel sprouts but I have never seen it bear any sprouts, so wasn't sure what this is, may be it could be collard

I have this plant in my garden/ wanna be vegie patchup the back it was in there when I moved into this house last year 2021 in April if it is brussell sprouts it hasn't had any on it. What is this collard I have seen mention a few times?

They are in the same family. I have tried to grow Brussels sprouts here in hot humid FL before and even tho they didn't do well at all, they still made some teeny tiny sprouts.

Cassandra, are you in the UK? We don’t grow collards here. Google for info. If you start a new post with a picture of your plant maybe we can id it for you.

there is a cabbage variety which is called walking cane stick, not sure where it came from

and in an German veggy seed shop (from an organic collective) I found a "Palm tree cabbage" from Galicia which is

Brassica oleracea var. viridis botanically

and they all can cross pollinate
