If you have the budget a brick entry, stairs and walkway would add charm. The red door is a great idea also some vertical planting would breakup the space and balance the long window

Yes, a portico would be lovely on your home. Although the black shutters are traditional perhaps a change of color may spice up your exterior. Brick steps may also help with planters of colorful flowers.

Who actually designs and places a portico? Is it an architect? Contractor?

Chunky white window boxes on upstairs windows with gobs of flowers!! Could do on 1st floor as well, or put in low boxwood hedges with hydrangea bushes behind them. I've also seen white house, black shutters and front door was green like a bright avocado OR a bright, sunny yellow front door. Either color looks really pretty and fun!

I suggest that you widen the garden along the front of the house.

I can't see the soffits and the roof color, but on our white house/black roof and shutters/red door/ painting the soffit and the little strip in front light grey made a big difference. It might be that you could use the grey on the trim around the door. There's a nice architectural detail there that is lost in the white paint.

I'd love to see you tidy up the front landscaping, add some ornamental trees to the front porch and how about some script letters on the front of the portico?
Personally I'd go with a black door and leave the shutters black as well. The house is so classic, I'd capitalize on that!

I love the idea of the red door. What about canvas awnings over the 1st story windows? I would definetly put a portico or roof over the front porch to keep company dry when visiting. I also agree with the script numbers, very classic.

Of course this is depending on budget. As far as the landscaping, I feel a brick walkway will add warmth and would go more with the classic for the style of this house.

Beautiful house...exactly like the one my parents built in 1952! Typically, at least in their Boston suburb, the houses did not have a portico. I can understand why you would like one....rain, snow, etc, but I like it just the way it is. If you do paint (or by this time have painted) your door red, don't forget to paint your storm door red, also.

Hi congratulations, its a beautiful house. A portico would be nice! In the meantime a storm door that has more glass (or smaller frame) would show off your new red door better! Ive even seen the storm in black which would accent the shutters.

As for the house numbers and their size, you should check with your local building/housing codes to see what the regulation is in your community. Personally, I would add wall-mounted lights that flank the door, take down the hanging light on the center door trim, and then center large, black numbers on this door trim or lintel, if you will. Red doors are a bit overdone, and I wonder if you would consider a refreshing color like lime green or yellow for the door? A soft beige would look nice, provided you would have beige on the fascia of the roof overhang and on the porch ceiling and porch floor. I would suggest painting the backs or risers of steps white to make the details of the steps stand out.

This is an old post, but I'll comment on house numbers. You want to use large, easy to read one so that the police, fire and EMS services can easily see them. My husband is a firefighter and I can't tell you the number of times I've heard him mention how they had to have dispatch call the reporting party back as they couldn't find the house because they weren't clearly marked. This could cost something their life or home.
