We are going to be using our island as our main table for paying bills, doing homework, etc.. Do you think the 10 cans are plenty of light for all functions?

It depends on the size of the kitchen, ceiling heights, the bulbs you use, and the type and size of the cans. Generally, I stay away from can lighting in most spaces except for kitchens, where I feel it is better to be safe than sorry.

What type and size of can do you recommend? Our kitchen will be about 16ft by 12ft (measured without cabinets) and we will have 10 ft ceilings. Island will be 9ft by 5ft and will be used as main work space in the house. (We will not have a kitchen table and will be doing homework, etc. in this space.) I can't thank you enough for this help.

I prefer to use 4" cans because they are a little more pleasing to the eye than the bigger cans. I am by no means a lighting expert, but I prefer to space them about three feet apart. Depending on where you are located there may be a lighting supplier/showroom that can look at your floor plan and help you determine the best lighting configuration for your space.

I am here in Atlanta. Any suggestions?

Masterpiece lighting comes to mind, but they sometimes go a little overboard with the amount of lights they spec.
