We are in the process of expanding our kitchen/family room. This has decreased the size of our living room (fine with us b/c we rarely use it and will use it more as a library or sitting room). The dilemma is the fireplace is now offset. We'd like to keep the fireplace, but need advice on finishing it. In my simple drawing, the "fireplace" I've drawn is actually the size of the 4" buildout for the chimney. The actual firebox is about half the size.

We were thinking of building out to make the chimney look wider on the right and then extending the brick or tile surround further on the right to balance things out.

I'd appreciate any input/advice. Thx!
