lowes has some pretty indoor / outdoor rugs I would get something with color like shades of green and white with design in the rug, have fun with the color. Buy a 5by 7

looks for rugs in overstock.com go for 100% wool, as they really wear much better. go for slightly bigger than your couch. I would not go for a big enough for your living room and dining room, as it will look bad. these are from overstock, and they are all under 300

What a great room. It is very large and in order to ground your sectional you need a large piece that will extend a foot outside of the perimeter of the sofa. Move your coffee table 18" from the sofa on both sides and this will help you determine the size of the rug you will need. Remember, a larger rug will ground the room rather than give the illusion that your furniture is floating.

If the dining room is a formal room, I would definitely add a rug and I agree that the chairs should pull out a couple of feet and remain on the rug. If it's an everyday dining table, i would only recommend it if there are no small children in the house otherwise it can get messy quickly.

The rugs do not need to match, however they do need to coordinate and playoff of one another. Some people do this with pattern, I prefer coordinating colors.

I would love to see other shots of the area, not just of the sectional. Makes sense to understand all the elements and placement before recommending rugs. :)

I agree with Ann Alderson on Area Rugs and would like some shots of the area as Karen commented but this area needs to have more Light ASAP .

What a nice open space. I would do an area rug in the living area and a separate one under the kitchen table. You wouldn't necessarily have to have anything under the kitchen table, but I think it gives a finished look.

I would just add a word of caution when buying rugs online - color on your monitor may differ from actual color of the rug so check out the return policies.

Definitely two (with the kitchen table rug being optional); definitely don't match them; definitely coordinate their colors and styles. Many good rug stores will let you take home rugs to try them out in your home. Even if you end up ultimately buying a rug on line, I think it is worth bringing some home in colors and patterns you think might work to see the different effects. It is much easier than ordering one on line and having to send it back. I have brought home many rugs that looked great in the store, only to find that their colors were utterly wrong in my particular room with my lighting and furniture.

But don't bring home anything too far out of your price range. If you fall in love with it and can't afford it, then the more affordable rug you later end up buying might feel like a compromise.

Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions. I have attached another angle. You can see my kitchen island in the far right corner. I am leaning towards Ann's idea of one large 8"-12" or 9"-13" inch rug. I would love to pull some blues/teal colors into the room since right now it is very light with the grey walls, beige couch and floor.

Here are some ideas I have for rugs. I love the geometric patterns of the Soho rug, Dwell Studios and Madeline Weinrub. (First 3 pictures) But part of me wonders if I should stick with something more traditional, like the beige one under the coffee table. (last picture)

Ooh. I love that gray one with the white medallions. Beautiful! I can't quite tell from the lighting in your room whether the colors would be good with your sofa, but on its own terms it's my favorite.
