What are you starting?

I'm sure some of you have been taking cuttings and planting seed like crazy. What have you started so far?

Palm tree seeds, about to start dividing and potting up orchids.

Numerous annuals started in my basement I have about 300 flowers in pots waiting to go to the GH when it safe. I have a bad case of Spring fever

Lots of hybrid daylily seeds. Saw my first sprouts today.

Also have a bunch of cuttings I took right before winter in my outdoor propagation box that I forgot about. They've had no winter protection so I figured most if not all were goners. Just popped a couple up today to check and I have well-rooted boxleaf euonymus, some climbing roses and rooted leaf cuttings of heuchera. First time I've been able to successfully root heuchera from leaf cuttings so I'm happy about that. Maybe sticking them really late in the year is the trick? I'm a newbie at this method so don't really know yet.

I started a bunch of holly cutting last fall outdoors and none rooted. Most rotted off on the bottom.

My geraniums and double flowered impatiens rooted fine in the GH.

I'm having a hell of a problem in the Rion with insect pests though.

Your GH isn't heated? As soon as seedlings sprout in the sunroom I take them out to the GHs.

Oddly enough, my orchids do better in my kitchen window and in the sunroom than those in the GH.

I didnt know that about heuchera. I am going to try that. Did you use rooting hormone???? Barb

I've got marigolds, pansies, snapdragons, violas, petunias, lemon grass, dill, eggplant, peppers (sweet and hot), and tomatoes all up and growing in the greenhouse. The marigolds are growing thier first true leaves, so I'll be potting those up pretty soon. I have some rudbeckia sown out there, but it hasn't come up yet.

This weekend I'll be starting poppies, thyme, basil, dianthus and baby's breath - I'll start the poppies and thyme right out in the greenhouse, and everything else in the dining room until they sprout, then they'll move out to the greenhouse as well.

I've got a couple more tomato varieties, some more hot peppers & herbs, and a few more annuals (begonias, coleus and violas) on order that should be arriving within the next week. I'll get all of those started just as soon as they get here!

My marigolds, mossrose, hollyhocks and more zinnias will be started this weekend. They grow rapidly in the GH. I have to watch my timing so I don't have to move too many plants "up" before they go outside.

I have different varieties of Zinnia's, marigolds, snapdragons, petunia's, impatients, geraniums, cosmos pansies strawflower tithonia,
hibiscus, dahlia poached-egg plants. My GH gets to cold yet like this morning it was 20 degrees in there. Later this week the night temperature will get down around 35 and so I may turn the heater on and slowly start bringing out the plants. My setup inside works fine though I mean I have impatients with buds so I am getting the light they need.

We heat our GHs. The ones with the seedlings is kept at 68 to 69F at night.

Rosepedal, heuchera are pretty easy from leaf cuttings. Take a single leaf, but it is critical to get a little chunk of the stem attached to the leaf. Off the shelf rooting powder, then strike them in whatever. I have rooted these under mist in peat:perlite, and in 100% compost in 1 gal containers covered in 1 gal ziplocks. They will need some shade for a while.

I've been repotting tropical bulbs...amorphophallus, various curcumas, Eucharis amazonica, Eurycles amboinensis, Zephranthis, Haemanthus multiflorus, Hymenocallis.

I have a bunch of seeds I need to start today.

Greenhouser...... what kind of night temps do you receive and what is your heating source. Does your GH follow closely with ambient temp at night when the heaters are off or do have a thermal mass.

rosepedal, I did mine pretty much as stressbaby described. Pulled the leaf off the heuchera as close to the base as possible so you get a little slice of the main crown that comes with it. Dipped in plain old rooting hormone powder and stuck mine in an outdoor propagation bed of pure coarse sand. It gets morning sun and filtered afternoon sun. It was so late in the year though I believe I had already turned the misting system off so the only moisture they received was what mother nature provided. Mine had absolutely no winter protection though it's probably better to provide some.

I tried leaf cuttings throughout the warmer months of the growing season under a misting set-up but was unsuccessful. Then I read somewhere that they should be done in the fall and it does seem to have worked for me.

Although there is thermal mass where I keep over tropical pond plants and rain water for the other plants, the temps inside my GHs follow the outsides temps if the heaters are off at night and on cloudy days. We use those small inexpensive space heaters from Wally World on thermostats from kkontrols.com. There are two in the 8X16' Rion and one in the small 6X8' HFGH.

    Stressbaby, Squirellpete

Thanks for the info. I am gonna try that this fall. They have some pretty Heuchara out now. Neat, buy one and make bunches of them.

I started some potatoe vines this weekend off of one plant. I hope it works. I used the rooting hormone. They sell like crazy here. If you dont buy one right away they are all sold out here. Barb

I did some Bougainvillea (Most likely won't root.. these things are like the devil when it comes to propagating!), Kalanchoe, Hoya macgillivrayi, schlumbergeras, echeverias, and some other odds and ends.

Has any one started datura seeds ? My daturas are only maybe 12 inches high and they are getting I think flower buds on them. I have been picking the buds off to put more energy into the plants so they will get bigger. Am I supposed to do this. Help..............
