Toro 824 rough idle

My snowblower is running rough. I've tried the fuel line cleaners, new gas. The mechanical aspect of the choke and throttle seem to be ok. That is as far as I took things apart. Are there filters on these things? Carbs?

I do use Stabil for the mower and snowblower for seasonal storage, and this is the first problem I've had.

Thanks.

No filters to be concerned about unless an inline fuel filter was ever installed. They have a screen in the tank sometimes. No air filter. Likely a quick clean of the carb would smooth it out- provided the carb/ throttle shaft isn't worn terribly. This would likely be only if it was an old machine tho.

An 8/24 is likely a Tecumseh, but could be a Briggs engine and service of the carb would be different. What engine do you have? Model #s are helpful. Is the rough running just at idle or is there surging at higher speeds as well?

It is a Tecumseh. I didn't get the model N#, but I did manage to take of the intake (?) from the carb and spray it with carb cleaner.

It seems to run a little better. The main issue was idle. Although, I had to run the thing with the choke open a bit while blowing, else it would come close to stalling. I had emptied out the gas tank while I was messing around with it. After "cleaning" the carb, I added some more sea foam and some fresh gas.
I am not sure how to adjust any of the throttle arms, etc., but everything seems to be ok in that department.

    Thanks

    Carburetors have four parts:

    Float Chamber
    Main Circuit
    Slow Circuit
    Transition Circuit

Float chamber supplies the fuel to the Main, Slow and Transition Circuits. The Main Circuit would be operational when the snow thrower is at WOT... So we can mark that off of the list of problems. The Slow Circuit controls Fuel Flow when the throttle is in the closed positon. On most carburetors there is a Pilot screw that controls the mixture via a passageway into the Venturi. I could go on on. But, I already can help you with telling what your problem is.

On Honda engines 90% of all carburetor problems stem with the "pilot jet" part of the slow circuit. If you have to run your engine with the choke to have the engine not hunt at lower rpms that means out of all the 4 main parts of the Carburetor the low speed circuit passageways are clogged with debris.

I am not a Tecumseh expert maybe somebody else is. However, all carburetors function the same way. Hopefully, somebody on this forum will read this and can help with the slow circuit part of the tecumseh carburetor.

I am Honda PE and General purpose Certified Trainer.

Carb is still gummed up, probably form the stabil flaking IMO. The Tec I have is bad about gumming up after being in storage. I usually have to spray carb. cleaner directly into the carb while it running, spray some in the bowl vent tube and pour some in the gas tank to get it to run and idle right.

There is a air screw on the side above the bowl. COunt the turns in, remove the screw and spray some cleaner inside and reinstall the screw at the proper setting. Shut off the fuel valve under the tank. It is then easy enough to remove the main jet from the bottom of the bowl and clean out the passages in the jet (one is very tiny). If you are brave enough, drop the bowl and clean the inside, spray up through the tube in the center stem. In the perfect world , you would replace the bowl gasket as well.

Thanks for all the input. I hope I can get to it tomorrow.
