Remove the air filter and shoot a spritz of gas, NOT starting fluid, into the carb. If it fires and quits, your carb is gummed up and needs overhaul.

You said you "hardwired the switch". What do you mean? If a switch is suspect,I disconnect it as it grounds the coil to kill the spark.

had 2 the first one picked up a rock a d broke transmission, started great. Replace it with that had different fender on so it wouldn't pick up rocks. This never wants to start have had it for 5-10 yrs. Just threw it away. Out looking to buy one now. If it doesn't start good right off the bat, it's goin back
