Alternative to Cedar siding?

love the look but don't want the mantenance...any ideas?

Cedar shakes and shingles are very durable and if done correctly will last longer than you own your house. Vinyl shakes look pretty good when they are installed but fade out very quickly and then look pretty cheap. Hardi board also will fade but it can be repainted. The cedar shingles on my house have been on for 25 years and we are just getting ready to restain in a clear natural stain. Only had to fix a few spots on the weather side of the house from backsplash off our deck. They have not been stained since the first time when we installed them. They were stained by being hand dipped in oil based in a slightly tinted clear stain and installed on strapping over plywood sheathing.

You might try fiber cement "Weather Boards" by Certainteed. I have never used them personally but they attempt to mimic the look and feel of cedar shingles.

Certainteed...really got burned by them with our shingles...but they do have some great looks in roofing and siding...most realistic cedar shake and cedar siding look..at least in the picture

Hardiboard is the newest and greatest stuff around our area. It has a 50 year warranty, and comes in a number of different colours.

Are you talking about Certainteed when you say "hardboard"..we are on a Lake in Wisconsin..our builder wants us to use LPSmartsiding but I don't like the look..where are you seeing it used?

I am wondering if this is a deep brown as in brown clad windows with a deep brown roof..hard to tell with the lighting..thank you chase65 someone else just suggested the same product..

foundrysiding.com is a web site that shows it's specialty cedar shake vinyl siding that is maintenance free and comes in a variety of designs and colours. The home photos on the site look great and I am considering looking into this product for our reno. Anyone used this product or heard of it? May be worth considering.

Check out the vinyl product called "staggered shake" at www.thetapcogroup.com - I never thought I would suggest a vinylsiding product, but this siding is truly realistic in every way: depth of grain, lack of repeating pattern, coloring... And as long as you DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT use their "same-colored" corner product, instead opting to use wide wood corners painted white, cream, etc you should be able to pull this off and no one will be the wiser. "Only your builder knows for sure..."

Hi I am looking for an alternative to Cedar siding which looks exactly like cedar which can be installed without lapping. I know Nichiha or metal siding but it costs a lot.
